On the 10th May 2006 the Waikerie Inland Saline Aquaculture Centre (WISAC) commenced operations to demonstrate pilot-scale, fish production systems, using saline groundwater from the Woolpunda salt interception pipeline.
Previous R&D using raw saline groundwater from this pipeline has identified mulloway (Argyrosomus japonicus) can be successfully cultured without ionic supplementation. The initial stocking of 3500 advanced, mulloway (average weight 340 g), were transported from the South Australian Aquatic Science (SAASC) to a 70 KL tank at the WISAC (stocking density 17 kg/m3). A further 15,000 juvenile mulloway (average weight 2 g) were transported to the WISAC and split evenly between three fibreglass, 10 KL tanks.
