Sowing for the 2008 season began relatively early at most sites with generally good early growth. However, the very dry spring resulted in much reduced grain yields at several sites.
As well, variety maturity played an important part in grain yield with earlier flowering varieties performing well. In many cases, hybrids with greater early vigour, produced a large amount of growth but could not then fill grain and grain yields were below expectations.
Over the whole state, blackleg was observed at lower levels than in the past five years or more. There was little internal infection noted when plants were cut in the NVT trials (Tables 1 and 2).
However, in a trial conducted in the South East, the amount of yield loss due to blackleg was twice as much as had been measured in a season with a good spring (2001).
Therefore blackleg still reduced grain yields significantly in some circumstances. The blackleg rating system for all canola varieties has been changed from the numerical one to a descriptive scale, conforming to the systems used for other major winter crops.
The new CAA blackleg ratings for 2009 are included in varietal descriptions in this document.
Highest yielding conventional varieties were AV-Garnet and Hyola50. Varieties such as AV-Sapphire are now significantly lower yielding than the above varieties.
At the earlier maturity sites, CB™Tanami, BravoTT, TawrifficTT and ATR-Cobbler produced reasonable yields. At the mid season sites, BravoTT also gave high grain yields, due to being an early-mid maturity variety.
In the mid north and Yorke Peninsula, other high yielding TT varieties were Monola77TT and ATR-Cobbler. In the South East and lower Eyre Peninsula, TornadoTT and ThunderTT also produced high yields. The TT hybrid Ttriumph Jardee was only tested at Bordertown and Yeelanna. At Bordertown it was the highest yielding TT variety but requires further testing in 2009.
Highest yielding Clearfield varieties over most sites were Hyola571CL and 46Y78. 46Y81 also produced good grain yields in the South East.
