Oats & Vetch

The oat and vetch breeding programs are national in scope and provide improved varieties for the southern region of Australia.  In order to achieve the outputs of improved varieties, there is expertise in genetics to understand the inheritance of the traits of importance and plant breeding to underpin methodologies to incorporate the desired traits.  Capabilities in the programs include knowledge of plant pathology to understand plant diseases and the inheritance of resistance genes, grain and hay quality required by industry, and agronomic characters essential to make the new varieties economically competitive for growers.  Data management is an essential component of the breeding programs to collate the volumes of information about early and advanced generation breeding lines for promotion through the breeding programs.  New variety guides and sowing guides for oats and vetch are produced in the programs to assist growers in their variety selection.

Newsletters are produced by the National Oat Breeding Program at least once a year and often twice a year to summarise data and activities in the breeding programs.

Industry development and whole of chain linkages from the breeding programs through to end users ensures new varieties meet the needs of each link in the chain resulting in high uptake of improved varieties.

Industry outcomes are improved productivity for growers, consistency of supply for processors and marketers, and quality hay and grain products with a competitive edge.
