SARDI's Wheat and Barley Scientists monitor the incidence and severity of diseases in cereals in SA which, when combined with knowledge of changing farming systems and variety resistance, leads to industry threat assessments, disease warnings and development of industry strategies to minimize economic damage.
We evaluate the resistance status of varieties and advanced breeding lines for industry extension purposes and screen earlier breeding lines to support variety development programs.
We undertake research into pathogen variation and the genetic control of disease resistance in wheat and barley leading to more efficient breeding strategies and delilvery of resistant varieties.
We develop improved germplasm with enhanced disease resistance for use by breeding companies.
We undertake research to investigate improved management options for the control of cereal diseases leading to more sustainable farming operations.
We provide support to other projects in SARDI and other agencies through the provision of novel germplasm, pathogen isolates and information on handling and control of cereal pathogens.
