Leader: Dr Hugh Wallwork
Hugh Wallwork is the Leader of the Wheat and Barley group in SARDI and specifically the Pathology and Genetics group.
He has worked on wheat leaf diseases since 1984, barley leaf diseases from 1990 and cereal root diseases from 1994. From 1982-84 he worked on resistance to take-all in triticale in the University of Adelaide. His PhD was obtained at the former Plant Breeding Institute, Cambridge, studying adult plant resistance to stripe rust in wheat.
From 1997 - 2007 he was Program Leader in the Molecular Plant Breeding Cooperative Research Centre responsible for projects on cereal genetics and germplasm development.
Dr Wallwork's principal interests have been on the identification and development of improved resistance to diseases in wheat and barley.
Senior Research Officer: Dr Margaret Evans
(Crown rot management)
Margaret joined the group in November 2004 taking over the crown rot management project from Jerry Dennis. Margaret's principal interests lie in on-farm management of cereal root diseases and the extension of research findings to industry.
From 1995-2004 Margaret worked in Victoria as state coordinator of the farmer group extension program TOPCROP. Prior to that Margaret worked at Minnipa Agricultural Centre in South Australia for nine years as a Plant Protection Research Officer investigating cereal root diseases and weed management. Her PhD was obtained at the University of Queensland, studying insect pests of soybeans.
