Seed Collection in Spain 15-30 May 2009

Amanda Bonython, SARDI

Funded jointly by the AW Howard Memorial Trust Inc. and the FFI CRC to undertake a Melilotus siculus rhizobia and seed collection in Spain from the 15th to the 30th May 2009. The collection mission was undertaken with Dr. Phillip Nichols (Senior Research Officer, Department of Agriculture and Food Western Australia).

Over the two week collection period thirteen sites across three provinces (Communidad Valenciana, Murcia and Andalucía) were surveyed. Melilotus siculus was located at six of these sites, which included the Pego-Oliva wetland and Doñana National Park. At these sites Melilotus siculus seed was harvested and soil was collected to allow for the isolation of strains of rhizobia. At three sites M.  siculus plants were found alive, and live nodules were collected. In addition to the collection of M.  siculus accessions, thirty other legume species were also sourced.
