Oceanography, Ecosystems and Fisheries Modelling Positions
The Aquatic Sciences Division of the South Australian Research and Development Institute (SARDI) based in Adelaide, Australia, will very likely be offering several positions in the areas of Physical Oceanographic Modelling, Ecosystems Modelling and Fisheries Modelling in the next few months. These positions would be to enhance our understanding of the marine environment and fisheries in the South Australian Gulfs and also the Great Australian Bight. The Oceanography Program conducts fundamental scientific research into physical and biological oceanography and also provides scientific advice and solutions to government and industry. The program also leads the Southern Australian Integrated Marine Observing System valued at AUD$9m.
The modelling would consist of the application of existing configurations of the U.S. Regional Ocean Modelling System (ROMS) including additional routines for particle tracking (LTRANS), waves (SWAN) and biogeochemical models (NPZD).
With regard to Ecosystems Modelling, the roles of this position would be to provide capability in trophodynamic modelling to assist multidisciplinary whole of ecosystem projects aimed to provide decision support in an ecosystem based management framework for key southern Australian marine ecosystems. Key capabilities of this position include a high degree of analytical skills and experience in trophic modelling (e.g. Ecopath with Ecosim, Atlantis).
Fisheries Modeller/s would provide high level, expert statistical analysis of data sets, model development and undertake stock assessments for wild-stock fisheries, principally in South Australia, but also extending to other Australian States or international fisheries. Statistical modelling would be undertaken by either statistical modelling software, such as R or S-PLUS, or by employing a more fully flexible statistical modelling programming language, such as AD Model Builder.
It is expected that the positions would be for 2 to 4 years at the level of post-doctoral fellow through to research scientist and any appointees would be expected to assist the Programs in all activities including ship-based field work.
