Postharvest Fruit & Vegetables

Staff in the Postharvest Unit are able to provide expert technical advice on the following systems involved with the postharvest handling of produce:

  • Design and Operation of Controlled Atmosphere Storage Systems
  • Heat-Pump Dehydration Systems
  • Hot Air Dehydration - Packing and Grading Equipment
  • Rapid Cooling Systems for Fresh Produce
  • Sulphuring and Drying of Tree Fruits

Outbreaks of foodborne illness associated with produce, including Salmonella in unpasturised orange juice, have raised public concerns about the safety of fruits and vegetables that have not been processed to reduce pathogens. Significant efforts have been made to assist growers, packers and exporters to identify potential hazards.
