Australia’s northern neighbours are benefiting from PIRSA divisional expertise in the cattle and poultry industries.
Papua New Guinea poultry manager Anton Kaupa Morua is undertaking an eight week South Australian Crawford Fund traineeship at SARDI’s Poultry Production Unit at Roseworthy Campus.
From the Christian Leaders Training College (CLTC) at Banz Campus, Mount Hagen, Anton is building his skills in research farm management and in running poultry trials.
CLTC participates as a non government organisation in a research project ‘Improving the profitability of village broiler production in PNG’ which is funded by the Australian Centre for International Agriculture Research and managed by SARDI’s Dr Phil Glatz (Intensive Livestock Production Systems).
“The traineeship has proven particularly beneficial to Anton in the areas of poultry management practices, research protocols and staff management,” Dr Glatz said.
Anton said new skills in proper record keeping, miniminisation of errors in research projects and proper biosecurity protocols and animal management, feed mixing were just some of the new skills he would take back to PNG.
As part of the SA Government capacity building program in East Timor, PIRSA is also providing a second training opportunity to Pedro De Deus, a technical assistant in the Ministry of Agriculture and Fisheries in Dili.
In his first training visit Pedro was provided training in SA which enabled him to establish a cattle feedlot on his return to East Timor and run demonstration activities and workshops with village farmers.
Dr Glatz said Pedro’s second round of training involves developing his skills on cattle management, meat quality and value chain analyses.
“I have been very lucky and am grateful for the training and support extended to me here in South Australia,” Pedro said.
“With my country achieving independence only in 2002 our cattle industry has much to learn from Australia, and this capacity building program will greatly assist its development.”
Training is being provided by SARDI, Rural Solutions SA and University of Adelaide.
