The SARDI Food Safety Research Program has won the prestigious 2005 SA Great Science and Technology Award, announced on Proclamation Day, 28 December.

The award was presented before 500 guests on the lawns of Partridge House, Glenelg, as part of South Australia’s Proclamation Day celebrations.

The program is a collaboration between SARDI and The University of Adelaide with scientists pooling expertise to conduct food safety risk assessments.

Program Leader Dr Andy Pointon was honoured to accept the award on behalf of the team.

“To be recognised for the contribution and quality of our scientific effort is a real achievement for the team,” he said.

“In food safety, there is no let-up and a tightening of national and international legislation now means claims of food safety must be substantiated to the highest standards.

“By integrating scientists from diverse fields such as microbiology, risk modelling, epidemiology and food statistics, we can attack opportunities and threats in food safety from many perspectives.

Dr Pointon said the Food Safety Team, had also attracted national recognition, and was increasingly awarded repeat contracts and grants from national industry organisations and public health agencies.
