Approval Process for New Projects

OUTCOME: No new research contracts should be signed without PIRSA Animal Ethics Committee (AEC) approval for the proposed animal research work.

  • Many research funding organisations call for Preliminary Research Proposals : no AEC approval is required for their submission.
  • Research proposals submitted as full grant applications must have approval for the proposal.
  • Once the research contract is signed, all subsequent research projects must be submitted in full to the AEC for approval.
  • The AEC fee is charged on a project by project basis; a project can cover repeated experiments using the same protocol (usually over a year), eg approval for a block of experiments incurs a single "consideration" fee.

REMINDER

  • Animal Ethics Approval is required where the animal interventions are beyond routine animal husbandry procedures.
  • When the full submission has been approved for funding and the project work is being contracted with collaborators, eg The University of Adelaide, animal ethics approval must be obtained from all collaborating organisations.
