Rural Solutions SA (external link) staff within the Pig and Poultry Production Institute (PPPI), provide advisory, communication and ad-hoc services to the South Australian pig industry.
Advisory Services
Rural Solutions SA staff withing PPPI are able to advise on pig production matters including:
- Regional development - expansion of pig production and processing in South Australia, particularly in the Murraylands and the Mid North regions
- Sustainable systems - the increasing trend towards pigs being produced in ecologically and welfare sustainable facilities
- Product quality and consistency - best quality product resulting from continuous improvement to match world's best practice for quality assurance and reproduction
- Policy advice - the government is provided with timely relevant information and advice on all matters relevant to the pig industry
- Innovation - new and innovative mechanisms for industry development are formulated and trialled.
Communication Services
A highly effective communications program for the South Australian pig industry is maintained through the quarterly magazine Pig Industry News and the faxstream update sheet PPPI Monthly.
The Pig Industry News (PIN) is a quarterly magazine edited by Graeme Pope and with editorial content produced by PPPI staff. It is distributed widely in South Australia as well as nationally and overseas, and deals with issues of relevance to pig production, research and marketing. PIN is published by Rural Press Limited, who are also responsible for its distribution and advertising content.
The PPPI Monthly is a one-page faxstream distributed to the South Australian industry and a number of interstate organisations. It promotes PPPI research and extension activities and gives notice of upcoming events.
Ad Hoc Industry Services
PPPI's Rural Solutions SA staff organise and manage meetings, seminars, workshops and individual consultancies on an ad hoc basis. These occasions are usually related to opportunities arising or matters of currency, such as visits to South Australia by interstate and overseas speakers, or emerging disease or marketing issues.
PPPI's Rural Solutions SA staff also act on behalf of the national Pig Research and Development Corporation as disseminators of research results and organisers/managers of PRDC-sponsored events in South Australia.
