Intensive Livestock Production Systems

The aim of this Science Program Area (SPA) is to assist industry to develop sustainable, cost & energy efficient production systems that meet consumer’s expectations of clean, healthy food produced in welfare friendly systems. To achieve this aim, the SPA seeks to:

  • Lead & conduct innovative & practical research that enhances the economic growth of industry
  • Provide the highest quality research & development facilities within Australia to underpin the international competitiveness of industry
  • Develop new technologies for, and improve the efficiency & economic status of, Australian industry
  • Identify opportunities for new products, processes & services &, where applicable, facilitate their development to commercial application
  • Identify, develop & maintain partnerships, collaborations & alliances that optimise the use of research & development resources for the enhancement of industry
  • Rapidly respond to the ever-changing needs of Australian industry to ensure its continuing viability

This SPA provides research & development in nutrition, reproduction, housing, production & welfare for the pork, chicken meat & egg industries. The SPA is funded through inputs from SARDI, PIRSA, the University of Adelaide, national & state-based research & development funds, The Pork & Poultry Cooperative Research Centres, contracts with industry, user pay services to industry & government, charges for training courses & demonstrations, fees for lecturing & the sale of produce.

Resources available include:

  • Dedicated well-trained staff with strong track records in service to industry including conduct of experimentation to comply with GCP (Good Clinical Practice) standards required for registration purposes
  • A 320-sow farrow-to-finish piggery including dedicated research facilities
  • Large experimental poultry facilities
  • A range of laboratories servicing nutritional & reproductive research
  • Access to specialised facilities and expertise through collaborations with research scientists and technicians in:
  1. SARDI Field Crops Pathology Unit
  2. Department of Animal Science, University of Adelaide
  3. Gastroenterology Unit, Women’s and Children’s Hospital, North Adelaide
  4. Division of Animal Science, University of New England, Armidale
  5. CSIRO Livestock Industries, Geelong
  6. Australian National University, Canberra
  7. Other research institutions and companies in Australia and overseas
