… What can it do for you?

PigPulse 3.2 is a windows based software package which detects and reports on real changes in piggery production data. It then presents these changes in a graphical form, allowing easy interpretation of trends by the user. Computerised herd recording packages are essential management tools but produce enormous amounts of data, which can become confusing.

A key advantage of the PigPulse system is its ability to search through the huge amounts of data and report only the traits which have changed in a given time period. This saves the time of printing, searching and interpreting every report generated by your herd recording program. Only the key issues are reported, which prevents time being wasted chasing red herrings.

PigPulse is also a valuable tool for monitoring the effect of management changes on production, for example, the introduction of a new product or procedure. The real effect on desired traits can be followed from the time the changes are implemented.

Herd Performance against Production Targets is presented graphically, enabling fast detection of areas with potential for improvement. pigpulse_3a.jpg (10069 bytes)

Benchmarking between units provides fast across herd comparison for multiple unit enterprises or producer groups. The same feature offers potential for benchmarking between regions or even countries! pigpulse_4a.jpg (10288 bytes)

Seasonal Analysis of data detects recurring trends over time providing evidence for management intervention. For example, the real effect of season on reproductive performance over time can be monitored historically and in real time.

Using PigPulse as a tool to monitor variability gives the opportunity to decrease week to week variability in performance. Reducing variability aids in improving performance by eliminating the once off glitches and spikes in production. Once this variability is controlled, production flows are smoothed out and further increases in performance become easier to achieve. The following examples illustrate the potential for improvement.

Michael Moore at the Pig and Poultry Production Institute has been trained by PRDC to deliver PigPulse workshops, and backup service, to producers wishing to incorporate PigPulse into their existing herd recording system.
