Snail Management

Integrated Snail Management in the Southern Region

Project Investigators: Megan Leyson and Dennis Hopkins
Technical Officers: Nathan Luke and Kerrin Maratos

Project Summary

The aims of the project are to develop and extend integrated management strategies for snail control across southern Australia.

  • Field Management: This project involves close liaison with selected growers and grower groups to establish a network of sites where the problem of snail assessment, population monitoring, baiting strategies and pre- and post-harvest management can be examined.
  • Snail Ecology and Population Dynamics: Population sampling of Cochlicella barbara, the small pointed snail is being carried out over two consecutive years. The efficacy of baits against conical snails, Cochlicella acuta and C. barbara are being assessed.
  • Biological Control: Releases of the parasitic fly (parasite of the conical snail C. acuta) will be made over summer periods throughout the project and all release sites will be assessed for parasite establishment and dispersal. Large numbers of parasites released at 3 nursery field sites during the summers of 2002–2004.
