A Diagnostic has recently been established for the identification of nematodes from plants and soil from agricultural, horticultural, pasture and sugarcane crops in Australia. Funding for this project has been obtained from SARDI, the Grains Research and Development Corporation (GRDC), the Horticulture Australia Ltd (HAL) and Sugar Research and Development Corporation (SRDC).
This service is currently offered free to those in the Grains, Horticultural and Sugar industries.

While methods for sampling differ between crop and soil types, the following general information applies for sample collection:
For soil samples
- collect 20 small samples (cores) from each area to be sampled, and bulk all samples into one bag. If sampling affected and unaffected areas, label separately.
- For soil samples, a minimum of 300 g and a maximum of 1 kg of soil is required.
- Sampling depth depends on crop type (usually between 0-30cm) and if plants are present, samples are taken near the base of the plant.
- For this Diagnostic Service, samples are best taken in moist soil.
- Samples should be kept cool after collection (either in fridge or in an esky/icebox) and sent as soon as possible.
For plant samples
- For grain and pasture crops, collect 5-20 plants, with as much root system as possible.
- For tree, vines or sugarcane crops, collect soil plus root samples close to the base of affected plants.
|
All samples should be sealed in plastic bags and labeled clearly with a permanent marker. For each sample, the following information is required either on or stapled to the bags:
- name and contact details to send results
- paddock name
- paddock history for previous 3-5 years (if available)
- crop type/variety (if currently in crop)
- sampling date

Plant-parasitic nematodes in Australia
A list of all plant-parasitic nematodes recorded in Australian agricultural, horticultural, viticultural, pasture and sugarcane cropping systems is being compiled. Once complete, this list will contain images and descriptions of nematodes, economic importance, plant symptoms, host range and geographic distribution.
