Livestock and Farming Systems research division assists the animal industries in the economic and sustainable production of high quality, competitively priced produce. The development and marketing of livestock industries and products, and the provision of policy advice to government on animal issues, are two key objectives of livestock programs.
Livestock and Farming Systems programs include dairy, beef, sheep meat and wool, pigs and poultry.
Farming Systems science program area operates from Minnipa Agricultural Centre focusing on climate change, conservation tillage systems, precision agriculture, soil biology and constraints, crop nutrition, plant protection, cereals and pastures and livestock nutrition and management.
Grazing Production Systems science program area conducts scientific research on beef production, sheep meat and wool production and on the sustainability of existing and novel grazing systems designed to increase industry productivity.
Intensive Livestock Production Systems science program area specialises in the pork, chicken and egg industries with research & advisory capabilities in the areas of pig reproduction, environment & health, and chicken nutrition, housing & welfare..
Livestock Breeding and Genetics science program area provides a range of specialist capabilities in quantitative and molecular genetics, reproductive biology and wool metrology currently being applied mainly to the extensive livestock industries of sheep and cattle to enhance genetic improvement programs, breeding efficiency and to ensure product quality, but which can also be applied to aquatic species and other livestock species (dairy cattle, pigs, chickens, goats, deer, alpaca, rabbits etc).
Pasture Improvement science program area breeds pasture and shrub varieties to optimise the use of pastures to improve sustainability and provide education and extension activities to farmers and industry.
SARDI's Livestock and Farming Systems research division carries out research at the University of Adelaide's Roseworthy Campus and Waite Campus, Minnipa Agricultural Centre, Turretfield Research Centre, Struan Research Centre and Flaxley Agricultural Centre.
