Dr. Taverner is recognised as a specialist in the field of citrus postharvest research, particularly in the areas of decay control, sanitation and market access (quarantine pests) issues. He is the leader of the Product Integrity and Quality Group.

Exporters and regional marketing boards routinely ask Dr. Taverner to investigate postharvest issues. He is regularly sought by industry for expert opinion, and to audit supply chains after market failure. Dr Taverner’s group has played an integral role in the maintenance of the Navel Export Program to the USA since its inception. He also supervises a program to identify constraints and improve the citrus supply chain in Eastern Indonesia.

Dr. Taverner is co-inventor of a novel surface disinfestation treatment using a unique blend of food grade components, including highly refined oil. His group and Caltex Australia have developed and commercialised this product for use on citrus. He also conducts biosecurity research for overseas agencies, such as the United States Department of Agriculture.

Dr. Taverner is editor of the Citrus Packer Newsletter, which distributes technical information to packers, distributors and researchers in Australia, with additional copies sent to another 20 different countries.
