Roles and expertise:

Glenys Wood has an environmental biology background and has been with the Entomology research group since 1998. Initially, the focus of her research was to develop a toxic bait to suppress invasive European Wasp populations within urban Adelaide and environs. Non-perishable baits with potential for commercialisation were developed and trialed. On gaining further funding from industry, the research continued and several new molecules were examined for their suitability as toxic European Wasp baits.

Recently, Glenys completed 4 years as the senior research officer for the 'Revegetation by Design' project, conducted on the Northern Adelaide Plain. This novel project that combined scientific, social and environmental outcomes, was developed to demonstrate the potential for using native re-vegetation options to reduce horticultural pests and diseases.

The success of 'Revegetation by Design' has led to a further round of funding and Glenys will lead this next phase of research from 2006-2009, which will build on key findings of the initial research. In particular, specialist wasp species that will target pest thrips and predatory brown lacewings, were identified for further study. In addition, native plant species that will not attract or support crop pests like Western flower thrips (WFT) will be investigated. Further, it is hoped that plant characteristics which effect thrips survival and reproduction can be identified. She hopes that the new study will thus deliver a better understanding of what defines the concept of Revegetation by Design in horticulture, at a fundamental level.
